The colourful plastic benches of Nehru Park evoke the silhouette of Valyo’s furniture, but their material use is unique in Hungary.
Valyo’s first pieces of furniture were built for the STÉG through community construction; we developed this form further over the years, and we still use the continuously produced pieces today. When designing Nehru Park, we wanted to use this organically developing system as well, in a durable public‑space version, incorporating the results of our earlier experiments. During client consultations, the first metal‑framed furniture pieces of the original plans were transformed into plastic furniture produced by rotational moulding.
One of the basic elements of the design was variability: the two types of base elements can be assembled in countless ways.
The BALLON benches we designed, made of plastic, could not be produced in adequate quality due to tight deadlines. Thus, although their ergonomics and design were successful, they do not function properly because of difficult cleanability and lack of maintenance. At the same time, with their distinctive appearance, they add colour to the park.
