WATERSIDE VOICES | Connecting communities and waterscapes
Through the WatersideVoices project, we’re working in Brussels, Rijeka, and Budapest to transform streams, rivers, and canals into vibrant spaces for everyone. Our goal is to increase accessibility and resilience along the Danube, Senne, and Rječina rivers by creating connection points for and with local communities.
Many European cities and settlements have been shaped by rivers, yet climate change and urban environmental pressures are taking their toll on our waterways. Rivers are becoming alienated from both people and nature, exacerbating ecological challenges and paving the way for gentrification. While strategies exist, the potential of rivers and canals to contribute to urban resilience, social cohesion, and sustainable living remains largely untapped.
Waterside Voices aims to return urban rivers and canals to those who live along their banks, with their participation. The vision and involvement of local communities are essential to needs-based action. Through participatory research and design in Brussels, Rijeka, and Budapest, three interventions will transform the Danube, Rječina, and Senne into lively hubs – advancing urban “green and blue” knowledge and shaping long-term plans. A digital platform will also be created to document urban waterscape renewal across Europe, alongside workshops and conversations.
